Nucleate Launches 2026 Grand Challenge: Aging Reimagined — New Health Frontiers
BOSTON, MA — April 15, 2026 — Nucleate today announced the launch of the 2026 Grand Challenge, introducing a new thematic focus: “Aging Reimagined — New Health Frontiers.” Now entering its fourth year, the Grand Challenge continues to identify and accelerate early-stage biotech innovations — this year concentrating on functional health and resilience across the world’s aging population. Developed in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly), the 2026 Grand Challenge will spotlight a new generation of therapeutics and technologies aimed at improving how individuals age; not by targeting aging as an abstract concept, but by addressing the measurable, real-world challenges that impact quality of life.
“The Grand Challenge has become a powerful engine for surfacing early-stage innovation in areas of emerging scientific interest,” said Debra Luffer-Atlas, Ph.D., Senior Vice President of Scientific Strategy at Lilly Catalyze360. “This year’s focus is on identifying potential opportunities to meaningfully improve health and function over time by targeting the underlying biological mechanisms that shape mobility, cognition, immune resilience, and tissue regeneration. We are excited to engage with founders and help accelerate next-generation research.”
The 2026 Grand Challenge will take place on September 22, 2026, at Lilly’s global headquarters in Indianapolis, convening a select cohort of early-stage biotech teams to present their work to Lilly scientists, business leaders, and partners. Selected finalists will have the opportunity to compete for a $100,000 non-dilutive grant while gaining direct mentorship from Lilly’s innovation ecosystem.
This year’s challenge will feature four focused tracks:
● Mobility & Frailty: Interventions that improve muscle, bone, and joint function together — targeting frailty, fall risk, and loss of independence.
● Cognitive & Sensory Health: Addressing hearing, vision, and cognitive deterioration as an integrated system, with clear functional endpoints.
● Immune Resilience: Enhancing immune response in aging populations, including infection recovery and vaccine responsiveness.
● Regenerative Medicine (Wildcard Track): Harnessing cellular, tissue, and biologics-based approaches to restore lost function — targeting wound healing, organ repair, and age-related degeneration with measurable endpoints in tissue integrity and functional recovery.
Together, these tracks reflect a shift toward healthspan-oriented innovation, grounded in endpoints that are clinically meaningful and translationally actionable.
