BOSTON, MA — May 2026Nucleate is a non profit organization dedicated to empowering tomorrow’s biotech leaders. This effort, driven by Nucleate PATH (Professional Advancement and Training Hub) in partnership with ZS, has successfully concluded the 2026 cohort of Consulting 101 (C101), a nine-week immersive program designed to equip academic trainees with the skills, frameworks, and real-world experience needed to transition into life science consulting.

Bringing together advanced-degree trainees from leading institutions across the globe, Consulting 101 offered a hands-on introduction to consulting through structured seminars, and a team of students tackled capstone projects with the guidance of ZS mentors, to tackle real industry challenges. The program culminated in a Demo Day, where participants presented their final project to sponsors, judges, and industry leaders in a live, realistic scenario where they delivered their work to the client, while they also engaged in Q&A.

“Consulting 101 reflects the kind of talent development we believe is essential for the future of life sciences,” said a representative from ZS. “By combining rigorous analytical training with real-world problem solving, we’re helping to build a generation of leaders who can bridge science, strategy, and impact.”

From Training to Application: Real-World Industry Challenges

Throughout the program, expert-led workshops delivered by ZS professionals covered core consulting topics and equipped teams with practical tools for leading consulting engagements. In parallel, fellows worked in teams on six capstone projects spanning critical areas such as life sciences, RNA therapies, and AI adoption.

These projects provided students with the opportunity to apply consulting frameworks to complex, sponsor-defined challenges by developing structured analyses, synthesizing insights, and delivering strategic recommendations across scientific, operational, and commercial dimensions. Teams were evaluated on problem framing, analytical rigor, feasibility of recommendations, and executive communication.

The program culminated in a full-day Demo Day, where each team presented its findings and recommendations to judges, sponsors, and client stakeholders, followed by live Q&A sessions. The final presentations reflected not only the quality of the teams’ outputs, but also their growth in problem-solving, adaptability, and professional communication throughout the program.

“The program fundamentally changed how I approach problem-solving,” said Adesh Vaidya, one of the participants. “Coming from academia, I was used to going deep on a single question. C101 taught me how to step back, structure ambiguity, and deliver clear, actionable recommendations.”

Participants consistently emphasized the value of working on real, end-to-end client engagements — an experience that is often difficult to access through traditional academic training.

“Having the opportunity to work on a client-facing project from start to finish was incredibly impactful”, said Alice Kangn, C101 participant.. “It showed us how to navigate ambiguity, when to seek input, and how to translate analysis into decisions that actually matter.”

Spotlight: Translating Science into Strategy

One of our sponsor clients during the program was Concerto Biosciences, where a team analyzed the company’s microbiome discovery platform to identify optimal entry points for consumer health applications. Their work focused on prioritizing launch candidates that balance near-term market opportunity with long-term platform value.

“The experience of working with the C101 team was exceptional,” said a representative from Concerto Biosciences. “They brought a level of structured thinking and scientific depth that meaningfully advanced our internal discussions, and their recommendations were both actionable and strategically aligned with our platform.”

A New Model for Talent Development in Biotech

Consulting 101 sits within Nucleate’s broader mission to create open-access pathways into biotech careers, particularly at the intersection of science and business. By pairing trainees with leading industry mentors and real-world projects, the program addresses a growing need for talent that can translate complex biology into strategic business decisions.

“Programs like Consulting 101 are critical to shaping the next generation of biotech leaders,” said Oliver Dodd, Executive Director of Nucleate. “We’re not just teaching frameworks — we’re giving trainees the opportunity to apply them in real settings, with real companies, and to see firsthand how scientific insight becomes strategic action.”

For many participants, the program served as a turning point — transforming consulting from an abstract career path into something tangible and accessible.

“Before C101, consulting felt theoretical,” Rossmary, C101 participant, reflected. “Now I understand how the work actually happens — and where I fit within it.”

Recognizing Excellence: 2026 C101 Awards

As part of Demo Day, teams were recognized for exceptional performance across key dimensions of consulting excellence:

Building What Comes Next

As a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Nucleate and ZS, Consulting 101 also served as a learning experience for organizers and partners alike. Feedback from participants underscored both the program’s impact and its potential for growth, with many advocating for its continuation and expansion.

“This program should absolutely continue,” Alia, C101 participant shared. “It provides a level of real-world exposure that’s incredibly hard to find elsewhere, and it changes how you think about your own career.”

Organizers noted that future iterations will build on these learnings, refining expectations around time commitment, expanding opportunities for cross-cohort engagement, and deepening client interaction throughout the program.

As demand for hybrid scientific and strategic talent continues to grow, Nucleate and ZS plan to expand Consulting 101 and deepen its integration with industry partners. The program represents a scalable model for bridging academia and industry, equipping scientists not only to generate knowledge, but to translate it into impact.

Applications for the next cohort of Consulting 101 will open later this year.
