Nucleate Unveils Its 2026 Activator Cohort: A Global Pipeline of De-Risked Scientific Innovation

BOSTON, March 2026 — Nucleate, the non-profit organization dedicated to empowering the next generation of biotech founders is becoming the global platform for identifying and scaling high-potential life science technologies. Today they have announced the selection of their 2026 Activator cohort. Representing the most competitive cycle in the organization’s history with only 180 technologies admitted from a global pool of over 800, this cohort marks a shift in how early-stage innovation is sourced, filtered, and empowered to reach the market. These teams are joining Nucleate’s larger innovation portfolio, representing 1300 technologies sourced from over 700 universities across 24 regions since the Activator’s inception.

Sourcing at the level of the labmate

Traditional venture and acceleration models often wait for a company to form before engaging. Nucleate operates earlier, taking an open-access educational approach to prepare the next generation of innovators. This allows Nucleate to operate as a global educational and innovation sourcing platform for promising life science technologies. This platform facilitates the identification of breakthrough research in a wide range of institutions; only this year, the 2200+ applicants were associated with more than 400 different academic institutions.

By sourcing directly at the “level of the labmate”, Nucleate creates a powerful technology vigilance engine that provides access to trainees with promising science and brings their work to the market years before it reaches traditional BD channels. To increase the success chances of these ventures, Nucleate provides a curriculum specifically engineered to empower the founders and help them de-risk three pillars of early venture failure: technical risk, team risk, and market risk.

An X-Ray on the 2026 Cohort

The 180 teams selected this year represent 17 chapters, including our Global Virtual Activator which provides access to Nucleate’s network and educational resources regardless of their geographical location. Biopharma and therapeutics teams dominate at 38% of the cohort, followed by teams creating enabling technologies, platforms, and research tools which comprise 30% of the cohort. That pairing can be associated with the fact that the next generation of drugs will only move as fast as the platforms built to discover, deliver, and validate them. The 2026 cohort is building both sides of that equation simultaneously.

Teams developing medical devices, small molecules, and diagnostics represent almost 50% of the cohort, sitting alongside teams pioneering next generation modalities such as cell & gene therapies, RNA therapeutics, and protein degraders. Modalities that were speculative a decade ago now represent real ventures being built by founders with first hand experience on the science required to make it a reality.

The clinical indications spread tells a similar story, where oncology leads (45 teams) and platform technologies follow closely (42). Followed by 24 teams in neuroscience, 16 in rare disease and genetics, 11 in cardiovascular and metabolic disease. All of these are promising areas for developing innovations that could be transformative for patients living with serious disease.

Training the next generation of bio-innovators

Acceptance into the Activator is just the beginning. Every team in the 2026 cohort enters a structured curriculum of workshops covering topics like technical and market risk, strategic fundraising, and the operational realities of building a biotech company from scratch. To support this process, local teams have secured over 600 industry experts who are carefully matched with teams based on their industry focus, and will conduct consulting sessions to help teams de-risk the specific areas covered in each workshop.

What separates this curriculum from other programs is what happens between workshops. Each team has been paired with mentors who volunteer their time to provide hands-on feedback along the journey of these teams. These aren’t informational conversations, they’re bespoke working sessions designed to surface blind spots, identify valuable opportunities, and provide invaluable expertise that in a different context would take the teams years to figure out by themselves.

This format is only possible because of the generosity of over 2000 industry mentors and experts who have joined Nucleate’s database and volunteered their time to give back to promising innovators, 60% of these mentors work at the executive and director level across all verticals in the industry, and are spread all around the world.

The focused mentorship and expert workshops are powerfully amplified by the Nucleate Global seminars, which offer teams a broader, global perspective. This exposure not only enhances their venture but also sparks inspiration. As Dr. Rick Klausner (Chief Scientific Advisor and Founder of Altos Labs) reminded the finalist teams during the Global Activator launch event,

From Lab to Market: The Track Record

• Vitra Labs (’22), developing in vitro fertilization technology and cell-based therapies designed to make infertility treatments safer and more accessible by recapitulating oogenesis.
• DUB Therapeutics (‘23), developing breakthrough self-delivering RNA therapeutics to address tissue scarring and restore vision, transforming treatment for ocular surface diseases.
• Cloverleaf Bio (’23), building a platform of engineered tRNA therapeutics that act as “trojan horses” to inhibit the specific enzymes necessary for cancer growth.
• Manifold Bio (’19) building the first high-throughput in vivo (HTV) discovery engine, combining massively multiplexed in vivo screening and AI-powered design to create tissue-targeted biologics.

From Post-Docs to Founders: The Manifold Bio story

When Gleb Kuznetsov and his co-founder Pierce Ogden joined the Activator in 2019, they were postdocs with a promising idea: a platform technology to design tissue-targeted biologics. The program gave them the framework to build their first pitch deck, first finance plan, and first operating plan. Within a year they had incorporated and closed their seed round. Last year, they entered into a strategic collaboration with Roche to Develop Multiple Next-Generation Brain Shuttles for Neurological Diseases with a total deal value of $2BN.
